For many families living in hardship, putting food on the table will always come before buying a new pair of children's school shoes.

In many parts of South Africa, childhood begins with bare feet on dusty roads.

The morning walk to school, a journey meant to spark dreams and open doors, often begins without the simplest of essentials: a pair of shoes.

School Shoes from Recycled Waste

My Walk Made with Soul is a proudly South African, non-profit initiative with a big dream to ensure every child in South Africa has a pair of school shoes to wear.

Through an innovative partnership, supported by Netcare and Adcock Ingram Critical Care, we recycle uncontaminated IV drip bags, oxygen masks, and tubing into strong, stylish, and fully recyclable school shoes. It’s a shining example of the circular economy in action: giving medical waste a second life and giving children a powerful first step towards a brighter future.

This is sustainability that transforms lives by reducing healthcare waste while making an immediate, meaningful difference for our most vulnerable citizens: our children.

  • Just 20 empty IV bags are enough to make one pair of shoes.
  • Our custom machine takes only 17 seconds to create a single shoe, and just over a minute to produce two complete pairs.

HOSPITALS PARTICIPATING

There are currently 26 Hospitals across Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal participating in the My Walk Made with Soul project. Our dream is to continue to expand the project to include more hospitals including those in the public sector.

Since inception in 2020, My Walk Made with Soul has donated nearly 400 000 pairs of school shoes. That is 400 000 learners taking a “Step into Greatness” on their education journey.

Each pair is laced up, packaged with care, and delivered at no cost to children in under-resourced schools. These are not hand-me-downs or charity cast-offs. They are brand-new, beautifully made school shoes that children can wear with pride.

In a 2024 follow-up study, over 85% of recipients said they passed their My Walk Made with Soul school shoes on to siblings or friends after outgrowing them — a testament to the durability, comfort, and respect these shoes carry within their communities. This is one of the many benefits of our recycled school shoes in South Africa.
